RECL[AI]M 2024 - Generative Hackathons for the Commons is an event taking place from the 25th to the 30th of November, with two main focus: how can “Generative AI” technologies be developed and used democratically, for the Commons? And how can we update the hackathon format*,* plagued by extractivism and hustling culture, to promote instead regenerative, locally grounded and Commons-based technology development?

The goal is to ideate and test holistically regenerative hackathon models that can be replicated in the future, with the concrete goal of developing an open ended hackathon format to be launched for RECL[AI]M 2025.

In this year’s event we’ll test the format of engaging with a local events space, Buena Onda Social Club, to establish a meaningful connection with its community and stakeholders. The small group of commoning hackers / hacking commoners (10-15) will have this venue as a base but will move around as well, with sub-events and tours in the city of Barcelona, to create a deeper connection with the local context!

Engaging with AI, LLMs, and Generative Algorithms from a Commons-oriented perspective

Building on the success of the first RECL[AI]M event in 2023, this year’s hackathon continues to focus on making AI tools—especially LLMs and generative algorithms— easily accessible, local-first, transparent and collectively owned. The aim is to support collaboration among developers, researchers, activists, and projects, ensuring that AI is developed for the benefit of all, rather than being monopolized by a few large corporations.

Designing Open Templates for Commons-Oriented Hackathons

The major goal is to establish a meaningful connection with the Buena Onda Social Club space, as a new way to hacking which brings value and networks to local projects, but also to test and prepare open and replicable templates for future hackathons that focus on the Commons, both in general and for next years editions of RECL[AI]M

Work Tracks of the Hackathon

1.

Connecting and Empowering Buena Onda Social Club

This track focuses on Buena Onda Social Club events and community space: how can the group of hackers find ways to improve its current operations, with AI tools or other forms of organizational change? What are the community’s ambitions and goals?

2.

DAPPNODE // Distributed Local-First AI and AI hardware

This track focuses on decentralized AI solutions, where participants will build tools that prioritize local infrastructure and self-hosting over cloud dependency. The goal is to give communities control over their AI applications, enhancing data privacy and ownership. Dappnode's machines and platform are at the center of this track, providing the infrastructure for participants to create localized, self-hosted AI tools.

3.

COMMONS ECONOMY ROADMAP// LLMs and Knowledge Management Systems

In this track, participants will explore the intersection of Large Language Models (LLMs) and knowledge management systems. The aim is to build tools that can enhance knowledge sharing, organization, and accessibility, with the Commons Economy Roadmap as a testing ground for such new affordances.

One of the main sub-tracks will deal with the development of AI tools specifically for the CER project. Participants will work on building solutions that support the CER Knowledge Base, automating social media and content/research production processes.

Another key goal for this stream will be to develop a custom chatbot trained on CER’s Knowledge Base, which will assist both internal contributors and external users, creating a more accessible interface for engaging with CER.
