Project Summary

Sharetribe, founded in 2011, offers a comprehensive marketplace software solution for founders to create and manage online marketplaces without the need for coding skills, that customers pay with a monthly subscription.

In this sense it has been one of the first companies providing “marketplaces as a service”, and supports a variety of categories including rentals, services, and product sales, allowing for customization and scalability, catering to both first-time entrepreneurs and established companies. The company is Steward-Owned and the founders have been engaged with the Platform Cooperatives movement for years, on a mission to democratize the platform ownership, promoting efficient resource utilization and fair value distribution.

Why is it on CER?

Sharetribe is on CER because we consider marketplaces, both in a broad and specific sense, to be a crucial component of any economic system, including a Commons-centric post-capitalist economy; this pioneering company has brought significant advancements in what is now possible and affordable in terms of designing one’s own marketplace, empowering thousands of professionals, small businesses and communities worldwide.

On top of this, they always have put purpose before profits, incorporating their values in an ownership structure which is both effective, resilient and democratic. We are confident Sharetribe is and will continue to be a brilliant example of how cooperative software-based organizations can overcome the Big Tech age, providing high quality digital infrastructures that benefits all their stakeholders and the broader Commons.
