Introduction

Feelings about “the internet” have been deteriorating for a while, but lately the shift seems to be speeding up — and in doing so, it’s making some of the issues easier to see.

As the damages that Big Tech is bringing to democratic processes, mental health, and ecological systems finally get more widespread recognition, it’s important to take advantage of this opportunity window to mobilize as many as possible toward those alternative technological infrastructures which are not only active but already used by millions worldwide.

Distributed technologies like blockchain networks and peer-to-peer systems are creating digital infrastructure founded on fundamentally different principles than those driving mainstream platforms. They enable collective governance over centralized control, resilience through decentralization, and to favor transparency or privacy according to the specific context needs instead of mass surveillance by default.

However, technology alone cannot create the change we need.

For these distributed systems to serve human and ecological well being, they must be coupled with place-based regenerative movements that are rebuilding connections to local ecosystems and communities, as voiced by more and more networks (for more about this, check out this blog article **Ethereum Localism x Regen Coordination: Powering Regenerative Local Economies with Web3)**

These initiatives — from bioregional organizing to solidarity economies, from community land trusts to local food systems — are creating models of resilience rooted in specific places and responsive to local conditions.

In this article we explore how the convergence of distributed technologies with such place-based communities and movements has the potential to be one of the most important partnerships for strengthening economic and social resilience in the polycrisis.

We will also provide you with examples and networks of initiatives that you can join yourself, together with an initiative we have been working on, **Validators on the Ground.**
